From Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart:
The inclined head of the mother, resting on her hand in an attitude of worry, and the pale, haggard profile of the young boy are combined with the empty plate to form a triangular constellation. The emotion evident in the faces corresponds with the soft quality of the subtle pastel colouration on raw canvas. The pink tint of the background, a tone that predominates in the Acrobat paintings, relates to real experience: The Paris Medrano Circus, where Picasso observed and drew the performers at work, appeared in a pink tent.
